Conditional Impact on Arizona Universities

At a forum recently held at the Northern Arizona University, an internal comparison of budget scenarios was prepared to compare FY11 budget outlooks with and without the passage of Proposition 100. The following information includes both the cuts that will be implemented as part of the budget if Proposition 100 passes and the estimates of additional (contingent) cuts for universities if the May 18 sales tax election (Proposition 100) fails.

| University/Community College Education Reductions:
• The Arizona university system has been cut over $240M since 2009 down to 2006 funding levels. • Rollover of payments to the university system into the next fiscal year in an amount of $200M (approximately three months of state funding). • No state funding for university student enrollment growth (over 7,000 new students in FY11 which normally would have produced a state investment of $57M). • Suspending student financial aid to attend private universities. • No funding for building maintenance. |
University/Community College Education Reductions:
• An additional cut of $107M to the university system. • An additional cut of $15M to Arizona’s community colleges. |
