Parents in Illinois do not have nearly as much "choice" as parents in Arizona do. But do you know what they do have? Funding! So when my sister, who lives in Illinois, wanted a better program to stop bullying in her kids' school, she did not have to move her children to a new school. Instead, she asked her public school district to improve it, and they did! The public school district was able to leverage community support (parents) and taxpayer dollars to make changes that work.
In Illinois, they also have a systm of Regional Superintendents, so if the bullying program at my sister's district works, it can be brought to other districts via the Regional Superintendents. Note that's an administrative cost. Sometimes administrative costs save money and improve student achievement in the long run.

Dear Mr. Molina:

Thank you for sharing your education statement. We have noted with interest that your comment above is simply a reposting of your education 'policy platform' from your candidate website. (Note to other readers: Mr. Molina is running for Arizona Senate in LD19.)

While there isn't a parent in our group that would disagree with your assertion that Arizona families should have a wide range of school choices, it is worth noting that Arizona already leads the nation in this area. We have a wealth of district, charter and private options already available in our state and we are nationally recognized as a leader in "School Choice".

We invite you (and any other interested readers) to expand on your ideas on how to improve education in our state (including our public schools, which are currently the 'choice' of over 93% of AZ families) and your ideas for ensuring adequate and efficient funding for our schools. And, as always, we are also interested in any of your comments that relate specifically to the article above.

Many thanks, Lisa Hawkins - today's on-line site editor

The “culture” of education in Arizona needs to improve. Have you noticed if mom or dad is well educated there is a good chance their children will be well educated? Of course, the reverse is true as well. The message of education needs to reverberate in the walls of our homes, a culture needs to be raised. School money needs to reach the class rooms for QUALITY teachers. Parents need to be more involved and have the opportunity to choose where their child is educated.

The Arizona Republic found...

"Arizona taxpayers likely saved no more than $8.3 million in 2007 from private-school tax-credit
programs, a higher figure than originally estimated in an Arizona Republic article last week."

"Revised figures indicate that in 2007, the tuition tax-credit programs likely cost the state's General Fund about $19.3 million and saved local property taxpayers nearly $27.7 million, according to The Republic's analysis"
