On October 27, 2009, the Valley Citizen’s League hosted “How Can We Fully Fund Our Education Needs When The Arizona Economy Is In Meltdown: The next 1,000 days – funding Arizona education during an economic meltdown.”

John Wright, President of the Arizona Education Association

Among other topics, the education forum debated the merits of all-day kindergarten, with Senator Huppenthal arguing against the necessity of it, and Wright arguing for it.

At another education forum on October 20, 2009, lawmakers and representatives from the education community clashed over funding for Arizona’s public education.

Rep. Rich Crandall said he was taking the position as a “realist” and warned that cuts to education are inevitable next year given the size of the state’s budget deficit. Whereas Sen. Leah Landrum Taylor said the worst thing policymakers can do is to “go backwards” and cut funding for schools.
