Moving the goal post: State budget deadline now August 10th! 8/5/09

August 5th, 2009

The “drop-dead” date for getting the 1-cent sales tax on the ballot has been extended to Monday, August 10th. Arizona senators are still scheduled to convene on Friday, August 7th at 1 PM.
.
On Tuesday, with presumably one day left to pass a bill that would set a special election on Nov. 3, the state Senate delayed the drop-dead date to Monday. That’s the same day fans and foes of the tax-hike question must submit arguments to the state-wide publicity pamphlet, making elections officials jittery about how to solicit comments before knowing whether the issue will be on the ballot.”

We urge everyone to contact their Senators TODAY - this budget is VERY bad for education and for the future prospects of our state. Budget details can be found at “FY 2009-2010 Budget” (see link below). Contact information for your Senator can be found here.

These people are awe-inspiring in their boldness and manipulations. I have to say, I laughed out loud a few times in the NY Times article. Too bad it was at the expense of my beloved home state, AZ. This budget process has passed into the realm of absurd. I think Carolyn Allen, who is going against her party to state that it makes NO SENSE to cut taxes to the wealthiest and to corporations in the face of a massive deficit and steep cuts to education, is one of the few reasonable senators right now. There are anti-government legislators working hard to tear down our state, and I am very fearful of the long-term repercussions.
