House Appropriations meeting Saturday, June 27th!

House legislators are scheduled to reconvene Saturday, June 27th, at 9 AM in House Hearing Room 1 to consider the budget deal reached between Governor Brewer and legislative leaders. A vote could be held in the House as early as 1 PM. Friday’s late-afternoon Arizona Republic report indicated the Senate may try to squeeze in their vote as well, but so far plans “remain unclear.”
.
Official details have yet to be released, but it is being widely reported that this budget includes the permanent repeal of the state equalization property tax. This tax generates an average of $250 million dollars for public education. It was suspended in 2006 when our state had a budget surplus. It is scheduled to come back in 2011 at the same rate it was suspended; the cost to a home owner, approximately $7-$11 a month. It would be a devastating blow to public education if the House and Senate were to pass a budget that allows for the permanent repeal of $250 million meant for educational funding.

There’s still time to make your voice heard on the budget!
